Conquering Horizons Ltd, with the help of the Royal Marines Charity, commissioned the MAMRC to test the concept, design a solution and produce a first prototype

Phil, his wife Julie and Brian Meaden, ‘businessman who had long term charitable interest in disability and neurological disease research, setup Conquering Horizons Ltd to try and create a solution that addressed the key criteria that Phil had laid out.

With funding support from the Royal Marines Charity, they commissioned the MAMRC, to ensure that the concept would be feasible and create the beginnings of the design to help Phil.

The output from this was a mock up made from parts of other mobility devices – the Lash-Up Prototype – which fully rotates, has a lifting chair and is stable with the seat raised at low speeds.

VICTOR – Phil’s concept brought to life

VICTOR – Design focus on the users well being with a seat that can rise to standing height, a small turning circle and a sturdy wheel base for all terrain

VICTOR has been specifically designed to meet the real problems that mobility device users have to face every day

It has an adjustable pneumatic arm that can raise the user to “social height” whenever required and is stable enough to still move with the user in this elevated position

It also maintains the correct ride height so that the user can join the dinner table and has a measured wheel base that can fit through home hallways, whilst also being Class 3 allowing it to be used outside of the home on paths and roads

Finally by using the front wheel drive and rear omni wheel configuration, it has a turning circle just slightly larger than the wheel base and is able to tackle difficult terrain as well as kerbs and door steps.

VICTOR – Offers more than just mobility but the ability to live a normal life

Having this device will enable Phil, millions like him, to gain a more active, independent and normal life. This will not only give them an amazing physical advantage but will also have a hugely positive impact on their mental health, giving them the opportunity to be back up at a height that is eye level with their peers, allowing them to be at a height at which they were accustomed and giving them back the independence to be able to reach things again (e.g. access wall mounted kitchen units), allowing them to lead a more active and involved life. For Phil his role as a father of three lively boys, the ability to travel on most surfaces or terrains (including snow, sand, cobbles, gravel or stone driveways, paths, wood chips, etc.) and the support, comfort and control of a device that he has complete confidence in, will be revolutionary.

Being unable to use his Segway caused a huge negative effect on Phillip’s mental health. He felt trapped and a burden due to being unable to propel himself in a standard manual wheelchair. He had to rely on me, his wife, to push him around everywhere, which meant he didn’t want to leave the house. He really disliked the fact that he was not in control of where he was going or wanted to go. Going up hills was a no go as I am petite and don’t have the strength to push the combined weight of Phil and the wheelchair up hill. Phil felt useless as he had to watch me struggle to push him around whilst also trying to keep my eye on and look after the three boys, which was particularly difficult in crowded streets or places. These are problems that millions in his situation face on a daily basis, and I believe Victor will solve.

Additionally, there are several areas that have been identified by MAMRC as potentially patentable, which could deliver value to the company and spin off other concepts

All IP being developed in relation to this project will belong solely to Conquering Horizons Limited upon completion of the development work by MAMRC.

Front Wheel Drive Stability

In order to avoid tilt when at ‘social height’, MAMRC will develop stability technology that may well be patentable

Unique Rear Wheels

Multi directional wheels will significantly reduce turning circles and increase the manoeuvrability. Creating a specific innovative design to work in all the different environments the mobility device could encounter may yield a patentable solution

Seat Lifting Mechanism

MAMRC will have to create a solution that positions the user exactly where they want to be and reacts quickly to a number of situations, ensuring stability and comfort for the user. Solving these concerns may also result in a patentable development
